January 1719: first Kabuki adaptation of Chikamatsu Monzaemon's puppet theater drama "Keisei Hangonkô", which was written in August 1708. The play is produced by Arashi San'emon III in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai, with the following casting:
January 1724: Chikamatsu Monzaemon's play "Sonezaki Shinjû" is performed for the first time at the Kado no Shibai. It is part of a great program welcoming in Ôsaka the Edo actors Ôtani Hiroji I and Bandô Hikosaburô I. The program is made up of four plays: "Edoe Ukiyo Soga", "Sonezaki Shinjû Soga", "Kokusen'ya Soga" and "Kurofune Soga". They are staged with the following casting:
September 1729: Yoshizawa Sakinosuke I takes the name of Yoshizawa Ayame II at the Kado no Shibai. August 1730: first Kabuki adaptation of Hasegawa Senshi and Matsuda Bunkôdô puppet theater drama "Miura no Ôsuke Ôbai Tazuna", which was written in February 1730. The play is produced by Arashi Sanjûrô II in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai. March ~ April 1732: the play "Kiichi Hôgen Sanryaku no Maki" is produced by Arashi Kokuseki at the Kado no Shibai with the following casting:
September 1732: first Kabuki adaptation of Chikamatsu Hanji and Miyoshi Shôraku puppet theater drama "Imoseyama Onna Teikin". The play is produced by Sakakiyama Shirotarô I in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai (the casting is unknown). March 1733: the drama "Dan no Ura Kabuto Gunki" is performed for the first time in Ôsaka, at the Kado no Shibai. It is staged with the following casting:
January 1736: the play "Karukaya Dôshin Tsukushi no Iezuto", which was originally written for the puppet theater and staged for the first time in August 1735 in Ôsaka at the Toyotakeza, is adapted to Kabuki for the first time, in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai (unknown casting). September 1740: the play "Hirakana Seisuiki" is performed for the first time in Ôsaka, at the Kado no Shibai. It is produced by Nakamura Jûzô I and Nakamura Tomijûrô I plays the role of Chidori. December 1745: the drama "Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami" is staged at the Kado no Shibai for the first time, produced by Arashi Sanjûrô II with the following casting:
The same play is simultaneously produced at the Naka no Shibai [casting], Ônishi no Shibai [casting] and Kado no Shibai. November 1752: Arashi Iwajirô I takes the name of Arashi Hinasuke I at the Kado no Shibai. September 1757: first Kabuki adaptation of Namiki Senryû I and Miyoshi Shôraku puppet theater drama "Gempei Nunobiki no Taki", which was written in 1749. The play is produced by Anegawa Daikichi in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai (casting unknown). November 1764: Yoshizawa Sakinosuke II takes the name of Yoshizawa Ayame III at the Kado no Shibai. July 1767: the drama "Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami" is produced at the Kado no Shibai to commemorate the 6th anniversary (7th memorial service) of the death of Fujikawa Heikurô. It is produced by Arashi Hinasuke I and staged with the following casting:
December 1767: the drama "Yoshitsune Sembon Zakura" is produced at the Kado no Shibai for the first time. It is produced by Nakayama Raisuke I and staged with the following casting:
September 1774: Yoshizawa Ayame III appears on stage for the last time, in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai. July 1776: premiere of Iso Isosuke's drama "Yamato Kotoba Suikoden" at the Kado no Shibai; it is produced by Ogawa Kichitarô I and staged with the following casting:
April 1778: premiere in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai of Namiki Gohei I's play "Kinmon Gosan no Kiri", which is produced by the zamoto Ogawa Kichitarô I, with Arashi Hinasuke I and Onoe Kikugorô I playing the roles of Ishikawa Goemon and Mashiba Hisayoshi. December 1781: première in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai of Nagawa Kamesuke's drama "Tengajaya-Mura". A similar play is staged a few days later under a different title, "Renga Chaya Homare no Bundai", at the Naka no Shibai [casting]. The competition for the best performance and the best line-up is open between the 2 theaters. "Tengajaya-Mura" is produced at the Kado no Shibai by Fujikawa Sango with the following casting:
July 1783: the play "Kagamiyama Kokyô no Nishikie" is performed for the first time in Ôsaka, at the Kado no Shibai, with the following casting:
March 1788: premiere in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai of Namiki Gohei I's play "Sewa Ryôri Yaoya Kondate", which is produced by Nakayama Hisakichi and staged with the following casting:
January ~ March 1794: premiere of Tatsuoka Mansaku's drama "Keisei Haru no Tori" (7 acts - 23 scenes), which is produced by the zamoto Asao Okujirô in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai. The role of Oda Sanshichirô Nobutaka is played by Ichikawa Danzô IV. Only one scene, called "Uma Giri", survived but it is hardly performed. September 1794: first Kabuki adaptation of Chikamatsu Hanji's puppet theater drama "Kamakura Sandaiki", which was written in 1781. The play is produced by the zamoto Asao Okujirô in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai with the following casting:
March 1795: Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Komochi Yamamba", which was originally written for the puppet theater, is adapted to Kabuki for the first time, in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai. It is successfully staged from the 11th of March to the 27th of April with the following casting:
February 1796: Suga Sensuke's puppet theater drama "Keisei Koi no Hikyaku" is adapted to Kabuki for the first time and staged at the Kado no Shibai with the following casting:
July 1796: premiere of Chikamatsu Tokuzô's play "Ise Ondo Koi no Netaba" in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai. It is produced by Fujikawa Hachizô III and staged with the following casting:
November 1800: first Kabuki adaptation, at the Kado no Shibai, of Chikamatsu Yanagi's puppet theater drama "Ehon Taikôki", which is produced by Nakayama Tokujirô with the following casting:
January 1814: premiere at the Kado no Shibai of Nagawa Harusuke I's drama "Keisei Tsukushi no Tsumagoto", the first play in Kabuki history based on the "Asagao Nikki" world. The play is produced by Ichikawa Zentarô with the following casting:
April 1819: Ichikawa Shikô I takes the name of Ichikawa Danzô V in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai. March 1821: premiere at the Kado no Shibai of the drama "Kajiwara Heizô Kôbai Tazuna", a new version of the third act of "Miura no Ôsuke Ôbai Tazuna", revised by Kanazawa Ryûgoku. It is staged with the following casting:
5 February 1827: a fire breaks out within the Kado no Shibai, destroying itself, the Naka no Shibai, the Ônishi no Shibai and the Kadomaru no Shibai. January 1833: Nakamura Matsue III takes the prestigious name of Nakamura Tomijûrô II, which has not been held since August 1786, at the Kado no Shibai. Premiere of "Chichi Morai", staged as the second part of the new year drama "Keisei Chigo-ga-Fuchi" with the following casting:
March 1839: the play "Sesshû Gappô-ga-Tsuji" is staged for the first time in Ôsaka, at the Kado no Shibai, with the following casting:
1848: Ichikawa Tatsuzô makes his first stage appearance at the Kadoza. 21 April 1852: a fire breaks out within the Kado no Shibai and destroys three theaters and numerous others buildings. October 1852: Ichikawa Kuzô II takes the name of Ichikawa Danzô VI at the Kadoza. November 1855: first Kabuki adaptation of Yamada-no-Kakashi's puppet theater drama "Shôutsushi Asagao Nikki", which is staged as kodomo shibai at the Kado no Shibai with the following casting:
March 1866: premiere at the Kado no Shibai of "Shunshoku Ume Goyomi", the first adaptation to Kabuki of Tamenaga Shunsui's 1833 novel, which is staged with the following casting:
January 1872: Kataoka Matsuwaka takes the name of Kataoka Gadô III at the Kadoza. 1879: Jitsukawa Yaozô I becomes zagashira at the Kadoza. April 1891: Bandô Chôjirô makes his first stage appearance at the Kadoza. March 1901: Kataoka Tsuchinosuke II takes the name of Kataoka Gadô IV at the Kadoza. January 1907: Kataoka Gatô III takes the name of Kataoka Nizaemon XI at the Kadoza. January 1909: Ichikawa Udanji I and his son Ichikawa Unosuke I respectively take the names of Ichikawa Sai'nyû and Ichikawa Udanji II at the Kadoza. October 1907: Nakamura Masajirô II takes the name of Nakamura Fukusuke IV at the Kadoza. October 1941: Nakamura Senjaku I takes the name of Nakamura Kanjaku IV at the Kadoza; his son Nakamura Senjaku II makes his first stage appearance. |
