Career:

Before 1771: he started his career as a disciple of the Anegawa clan, performing under the name of Anegawa Tsunakichi I.

11th lunar month of 1771: he became wakaonnagata and took the name of Anegawa Minato II in Kyôto at the Kitagawa no Shibai, playing the role of Watari Shinzaemon's nyôbô Karaito in the kaomise drama "Miyako Yoshino Mikado no Takadono", which was produced by Mimasu Tokujirô I, welcomed in Kyôto the Edo actor Sakata Hangorô II and celebrated also the shûmei of both Sawamura Sôjûrô III and Yamatoyama Rinzaemon II.

1st lunar month of 1777: premiere at the Kitagawa no Shibai of the drama "Keisei Tonoi Zakura", whose plot was very close to Nagawa Kamesuke I's drama "Igagoe Norikake Gappa"; Minato played the roles of Otane and Sasao [casting]. Minato's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was jô-jô-(hanshiro)kichi (superior - superior - (half-white) excellent) [visual].

1st lunar month of 1778: premiere of Namiki Gohê's drama "Keisei Hakata Ori", which was produced at the Minamigawa no Shibai by Mimasu Jirokichi; Minato played the role of Onami [casting | picture and details].

1st lunar month of 1780: Namiki Gohê's drama "Kinmon Gosan no Kiri" was produced for the first time in Kyôto; Minato played the roles of Sonoo-no-Kata and Goemon's wife Oritsu [casting].

9th lunar month of 1781: Minato played the role of Oyoshi in the drama "Hirakana Seisuiki", which was produced by Yamashita Yaozô I at the Kitagawa no Shibai; his stage partners were Onoe Kikugorô I (Enju, Shigetada), Arashi Hinasuke I (Kajiwara Heiji Kagetaka, Matsuemon, Higuchi no Jirô Kanemitsu), Arashi Sangorô II (Kajiwara Genta Kagesue), Sawamura Kunitarô I (Chidori), Arashi San'emon VI (Ofude) and Shibazaki Rinzaemon II (Takatsuna, Gonshirô).

1st lunar month of 1784: he became tachiyaku and took the name of Anegawa Shinshirô III at the Minamigawa no Shibai, playing the roles of Dankurô, Katsuragi Minbu and Goheiji in the drama "Shin Usuyuki Monogatari"; his stage partners were Shibazaki Rinzaemon II (Sonobe Hyôe), Hanagiri Tomimatsu I (Magaki, Goheiji's wife), Asao Kunigorô II (Akizuki Daizen, Tsukimitsu Kyûzô, Gorobê Masamune), Arashi Sanjûrô II (Saisaki Iga-no-Kami, the yakko Tsumahei), Ichinoya Gonjûrô (Kuniyuki), Ogawa Kichitarô II (Sonobe Saemon) and Nakayama Tsuruzô (Princess Usuyuki).

11th lunar month of 1784: Shinshirô played in Kyôto at the Nishi no Shibai the roles of Akaboshi Tarô and Momoyama Tarôbê in Tatsuoka Mansaku's kaomise drama "Kuni no Hana Ôshimadai". Then, he went to Ôsaka to perform at the Naka no Shibai in the kaomise program "Naka ni Môketa Otogo Kaomise", which was produced by Nakamura Kumetarô II and welcomed the Edo stars Matsumoto Kôshirô IV and Iwai Hanshirô IV.

1st lunar month of 1785: Shinshirô's rank in both the Kyôto and the Ôsaka hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was jô-jô-(hanshiro)kichi (superior - superior - (half-white) excellent) [visual].

2nd lunar month of 1788: premiere at the Ônishi no Shibai of the drama "Gishinden Yomikiri Kôshaku"; Shinshirô played the roles of Hayano Kanpei and Uekiya Mokuemon (in reality Takemori Kitahachi) [more details]. It was supposed to be staged first in Kyôto at the beginning of the month at the Nishi no Shibai but the theater was destroyed by fire the 29th day of the 1st lunar month. The troupe went to Ôsaka to perform at the Ônishi no Shibai and to celebrate the shûmei of Kataoka Nizaemon VII.

9th lunar month of 1791: premiere of Nagawa Shimesuke I's chûshinguramono "Iroha Gana Shijûshichi Moji" in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai; Shinshirô played the roles of Kamura Sakyô, Teraoka's mother and Sanhin no Tasuke [more details].

1st lunar month ~ 3rd lunar month of 1794: premiere of Tatsuoka Mansaku's drama "Keisei Haru no Tori", which was famous for its "Umagiri" scene and was produced by the zamoto Asao Okujirô I in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai; Shinshirô played the roles of Takagawa Sehei, Shioya Tôemon and Yosodayû's nyôbô Komitsu [more details].

1st lunar month of 1796: Shinshirô's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent) [visual]. He was the kanjiku for tachiyaku actors.

1st lunar month of 1798: Shinshirô's name and rank appeared for the last time in a Kabuki hyôbanki. He retires from the Kabuki world around that time.

26th day of the 2nd lunar month of 1805 [1]: Shinshirô died in Ôsaka; his tombstone was located in the precincts of the Saikôji Temple in the district of Matsuzaki.

Comments:

Anegawa Shinshirô III was a popular Kamigata actor, who was able to play a wide range of male or female roles. He was more at ease in sewamono than in jidaimono.
