Dates of birth and death unknown. Disciple of Yamashita Kinsaku I, he received the name of Yamashita Rokusaburô and made his apprenticeship in Ôsaka. He made his debut in ôshibai in the 11th lunar month of 1748, when he played at the Kado no Shibai the role of Tatewaki's musume Kuretake in the kaomise drama "Toyoashihara Taihei Keizu", which was produced by Arashi Sangorô II. He performed in 1st lunar month of 1757 in Nagoya at the Ôsu no Shibai and he settled in Kyôto in Fall 1757 and performed in the 11th lunar month of 1757 at the Minamigawa no Shibai in the kaomise drama "Ôyashiro Musubu no Sanban Tsuzuki", which was produced by Sawamura Kunitarô I and Somematsu Matsujirô. He also performed in the kiri kyôgen drama "Kitano no Goengi Senbon Ume". He performed in the 11th lunar month of 1763 at the Minamigawa no Shibai in Sakurato Bunsaku's kaomise drama "Hôraisan Hatsuhi no Kachidoki", which was produced by Arashi Matsunojô III. This was most likely his last kaomise in ôshibai. He played in the same theater the role of the menoto Kochô in Namiki Shôzô I's ni-no-kawari drama "Keisei Hana no Shiroyama". His rankings in the 1764 Kyôto hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, were jô-jô-jû (superior - superior - "ten") [1] [visual] and jô-jô (superior - superior) [2] [visual]. He most likely performed afterwards in tabi shibai, miyaji shibai or inaka shibai. He was recorded for the last time in the 1st lunar month of 1765 at the Uchino Shinchi Shibai [3] in Kyôto, where he played the role of Hamayû in the drama "Keisei Adachi-ga-Hara". |
