Comments:

Ichikawa Ebizô III was a versatile actor, who excelled in playing jitsuaku or jitsugotoshi roles. It should be noted that he was not an aragotoshi as talented as Ichikawa Danjûrô I or Ichikawa Ebizô II and that he was also able to play onnagata roles. He reached the jô-jô-kichi rank in March 1741 and the goku-jô-jô-kichi rank in January 1760.

Ichikawa Ebizô III's best roles : Matsuômaru ("Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami") and Taira no Kagekiyo.

Ichikawa Ebizô III is also the creator of three bombastic plays belonging to the kabuki jûhachiban collection: "Gedatsu" (March 1760), "Jayanagi" (May 1763) and "Kamahige" (January 1769).

"Considered a progressive, Ichikawa Danjûrô IV mixed with every class, realizing that the key to character portrayal is accurate observation of human beings. The realism he infused into his roles was an important development in his family style" (Samuel Leiter, "New Kabuki Encyclopedia").

Ichikawa Ebizô III was also the organizer of acting classes, which helped to polish the skills of actors like Nakamura Nakazô I or Matsumoto Kôshirô IV.
