He was born in Edo in 1845 as the seventh son of the great star Ichikawa Ebizô V. He started his career at an unknown date, receiving the name of Ichikawa Akanbei. He took the name of Ichikawa Shinnosuke IV at the Nakamuraza in the 7th lunar month of 1863, playing the role of Genji in the drama "Ono no Tôfû Aoyagi Suzuri". He took later on the names of Ichikawa Juzô and Ichikawa Enzô II. He settled in Kyôto in 1870 and performed there several years. He was asked by his brother Ichikawa Danjûrô IX to come back to Tôkyô in order to take the name of Ichikawa Ebizô VIII in 1881. He died the 12th November 1886 at the age of 41. Ichikawa Ebizô VIII was a good supporting actor. |
