Career:

Before 1735: he starts his training as a disciple of the actor Hanakawa Sakuya, who gives him the name of Hanakawa Daikichi.

November 1735: he takes the name of Hanakawa Ichinojô and makes his first stage appearance in Kyôto at Kameya Kumenojô's theater, performing as an onnagata iroko in the kaomise drama "Ôkamado Miyako no Ichigura", which is produced by Yamamoto Kyôzô.

Fall 1745: Ichinojô goes to Ôsaka.

November 1745: Ichinojô plays at the Kado no Shibai the role of Koshio in the kaomise drama "Murakami Genji Kogane no Niiyakata", which is produced by Arashi Sanjûrô II.

Fall 1759: Ichinojô and Anegawa Daikichi go together to Edo.

November 1759: Ichinojô plays at the Ichimuraza the role of Akane Gozen in the kaomise program "Okunizome Shusse Butai"; his main stage partners are Ichikawa Danjûrô IV, Onoe Kikugorô I, Bandô Sampachi I, Nakamura Utaemon I, Sanogawa Ichimatsu I, Bandô Hikosaburô II, Ichimura Kamezô I and Matsumoto Kôshirô III.

January 1760: Ichinojô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, is jô-jô-(shiro)hankichi (superior - superior - (white) half excellent). He shares the same rank as Osagawa Tsuneyo I.

January 1762: Ichinojô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, is jô-jô (superior - superior). He shares the same rank as Ogino Yaegiri II.

November 1763: Ichinojô plays at the Nakamuraza in the kaomise drama "Daijôbu Takadachi Jikki", which celebrates the shûmei of Ichikawa Yaozô II and Ichikawa Komazô II.

January 1764: Ichinojô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, is jô-jô (superior - superior). He shares the same rank as Nakamura Matsue I, Tomizawa Montarô I and Sanjô Kametarô.

February 1764: Ichinojô plays in the same theater the role of Akoya in the new year drama "Hitokidori Harutsuge Soga". The roles of Kagekiyo and Chichibu no Shôji Shigetada are played by Ichikawa Danjûrô IV and Nakamura Shichisaburô II.

Summer 1764: he becomes disciple of Ichikawa Danjûrô IV and receives the name of Ichikawa Datezô I. He is from now on a tachiyaku actor.

August 1764: Datezô plays at the Nakamuraza the role of Naritsune in the drama "Heike Nyogo-ga-Shima", which commemorates the 6th anniversary (7th memorial service) of the death of Ichikawa Ebizô II.

November 1770: Datezô becomes katakiyaku and plays at the Nakamuraza in the kaomise drama "Nue no Mori Ichiyô no Mato", which celebrates the shûmei of Matsumoto Kôshirô II, Ichikawa Danjûrô V, Nakamura Shôchô, Ichikawa Monnosuke II and Nakamura Shichisaburô III.

January 1771: Datezô becomes kashagata and plays 2 roles in the same theater in the new year drama "Sakaichô Soga no Nendaiki".

15 May 1771: Datezô dies in Edo.

Comments:

Ichikawa Datezô I was a 18th century actor, born and trained as a wakaonnagata in Kyôto, who spent the last 12 years of his 35-year long career in Edo, where he switched to tachiyaku in 1764. He became katakiyaku and kashagata a few months before his death. He was said to be well suited for jidaimono dramas.
