Born in 1721. He was the son of Ichikawa Danjûrô II's disciple Mimasuya Sukejûrô and was called Ichikawa Suketarô and Ichikawa Tokuben. After the death of his father in 1725, he was adopted by Ichikawa Danjûrô II and took the name of Ichikawa Masugorô in November 1727, playing in the kaomise drama "Yatsumune Taiheiki", which was staged at the Nakamuraza. A great shûmei happened in November 1735 at the Ichimuraza: Ichikawa Danjûrô II gave his name to his adopted son and took the name of Ichikawa Ebizô II during the kaomise drama "Kongen Nana Komachi", while Masugorô and Matsumoto Shichizô I respectively took the names of Ichikawa Danjûrô III and Matsumoto Kôshirô II. In October 1741 Ichikawa Ebizô II and Danjûrô went to Ôsaka to perform for the enormous amount of 2000 ryô. Danjûrô suddenly fell ill in December and decided to go back to Edo. He did not recover and died the 27th of February 1742. Ichikawa Danjûrô III was a promising actor, trained in the aragoto style, who unfortunately died too young. |

| Ichikawa Danjûrô X | |
|
Born in 1882 in a family of bankers. He became the son-in-law of the great star Ichikawa Danjûrô IX, an unusual wedding for the Kabuki world. He was adopted by the Ichikawa clan and took the name of Horikoshi Fukusaburô. He was not an actor but was interested in the art and studied it with assiduity in the company of his father-in-law. After the death of Ichikawa Danjûrô IX, he was the legal head of the Ichikawa clan and had to appear on the stage. He joined in 1910 the troupe led by Nakamura Ganjirô I, performing only minor roles and it is said that his origins were kept secret for a few years in order not to bring some shame on the Ichikawa name. He finally took the name of Ichikawa Sanshô V in November 1917, playing the role of Soga Gorô in the bombastic drama "Ya-no-Ne". Although he was an average actor, he spent time and energy to revive many plays belonging to the kabuki jûhachiban, like "Gedatsu" in 1932 or "Nanatsu Men" in May 1936. He died the 1st of February 1956. He posthumously received the name of Ichikawa Danjûrô X in 1962. |
