Valerie Durham passed away the 6th of December 2013. She graduated from Harvard University and became in Japan a recognized expert in the field of Japanese literature. She was a brilliant scholar, who wrote many papers on the topic of evil women in late Edo and early Meiji periods literature (including Kabuki dramas). She was also a member of the team which started the Earphone Guide Service in English at the beginning of the 1980s. You can find some of her translations in "An Edo Anthology" (University of Hawai Press, 2012) and in the 3rd volume of "Kabuki Plays On Stage" (University of Hawai Press, 2003): in this latter book, she translated "The Scandalous Love of Osome and Hisamatsu" ("Osome Hisamatsu Ukina no Yomiuri"), "Scarface Otomi" ("Kirare Otomi") and The Woman Student ("Onna Shôsei Shigeru").

Based on a rakugo story by Sanyûtei Enchô, this will be a showpiece for the zagashira (Nakamura Kankurô) who will play multiple roles, culminating in a thrilling fight scene in a waterfall where he switches rapidly from one to another. An artist named Hishikawa Shigenobu (Nakamura Kankurô) is killed by a handsome samurai named Isogai Namie (Nakamura Shidô) who wants Shigenobu's wife Oseki (Nakamura Shichinosuke). He carries out the murder with the help of Shigenobu's honest, but simple minded, servant Shôsuke (Nakamura Kankurô) and the tattooed villain Uwabami no Sanji (Nakamura Kankurô).
