Career:

1781: Arashi Matsunosuke starts his career as a wakashugata.

November 1788: Matsunosuke becomes tachiyaku and plays the role of Sambasô in the dance "Imayô Sambasô", which is staged in Kyôto at Kameya Kumenojô's theater.

February 1797: his father Arashi Sangorô II retires and takes the name of Kyôya Shichihei.

November 1797: great shûmei for the Kyôya guild; Kyôya Shichihei and Arashi Matsunosuke respectively take the names of Arashi Raishi I and Arashi Sangorô III in Kyôto at the Minamigawa no Shibai. This is the last stage appearance of his father (isse ichidai performance) and they play together in the kaomise drama "Namboku Yuki no Miyako", which is produced by Arashi Kumanosuke.

January 1798: Sangorô moves to Ôsaka and plays 2 roles in the new year drama "Keisei Hana no Kitayama", which is produced by Mimasu Daijirô at the Wakadayû no Shibai.

March 1798: Sangorô plays the roles of Kajiwara Genta Kagesue, Yashichi, Izaemon, Matahei and Yamanaka Saemon in the dramas "Hirakana Seisuiki", "Gishinden Yomikiri Kôshaku", "Yûgiri", "Domo Mata" and "Iroha Engi", which are staged within the precinct of the Temma Tenjin shrine in Ôsaka. His stage partners are Yamashita Kinsaku II (Matahei's wife Otoku) and Sawamura Kunitarô I (Izaemon's lover Yûgiri).

September 1801: premiere at the Kitagawa no Shibai of Shiba Shisô's drama "Hakone Reigen Izari no Adauchi"; Sangorô plays the role of Iinuma Katsugorô [casting].

Summer 1802: the play "Ehon Taikôki" is staged for the first time in Kyôto, produced by Arashi Sankichi at the Kitagawa no Shibai; Sangorô plays the role of Oda Harunaga [casting].

May 1803: his father Mitsugen dies.

January 1804: Sangorô plays at the Naka no Shibai the role of Nagoya Sanza in the drama "Keisei Hangonkô".

October 1804: Sangorô plays the roles of Tabakoya Genshichi and Sakata Tokiyuki in Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Komochi Yamamba", which is produced by Anegawa Kamesaburô at the Naka no Shibai. The role of the courtesan Oginoya Yaegiri is played by Sawamura Kunitarô I.

January 1805: Sangorô's rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, is jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent).

March 1805: Sangorô plays at the Naka no Shibai the roles of Hayano Kampei, Ono no Sadakurô, Yoichibei and Amakawaya Gihei in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

October 1805: Sangorô plays in Kyôto at the Kitano Shita-no-Mori no Shibai the roles of Gorohachi and Fujiya Izaemon in the dramas "Kurofune Deiri Minato" and "Keisei Awa no Naruto"; the role of Izaemon's lover Yûgiri is played by Sawamura Tanosuke II.

November 1805: Sangorô plays at the Minamigawa no Shibai the roles of Yasuke and Taira no Koremori in the "Sushiya" scene of the drama "Yoshitsune Sembon Zakura".

May 1806: tour in Nagoya; Sangorô plays the roles of Kajiwara Genta Kagesue and Tabakoya Genshichi in the dramas "Hirakana Seisuiki" and "Komochi Yamamba".

March 1807: Sangorô plays at the Kitagawa no Shibai the role of Yamazakiya Yogorô in the drama "Futatsu Chôchô Kuruwa Nikki"; the role of the sumô wrestler Nuregami Chôgorô is played by Nakamura Utaemon III.

May 1807: Sangorô plays in the same theater the roles of Kajiwara Genta Kagesue, Yashichi and Tabakoya Genshichi in the dramas "Hirakana Seisuiki", "Gishinden Yomikiri Kôshaku" and "Komochi Yamamba".

July 1807: Sangorô plays in the same theater the roles of Yasuke and Taira no Koremori in the "Sushiya" scene of the drama "Yoshitsune Sembon Zakura". He also plays the role of the cook Kisuke in the drama "Ise Ondo Koi no Netaba".

January 1808: Sangorô plays at the Naka no Shibai the roles of Katsuranosuke and the yakko Shikazô in the drama "Keisei Shina Sadame".

November 1808: Sangorô plays at the Minamigawa no Shibai the roles of Umanosuke and the yakko Ippei in the drama "Koi Nyôbô Somewake Tazuna".

February 1809: Sangorô plays at the Kitagawa no Shibai the roles of Satô Tadanobu and the fox genkurô in the drama "Yoshitsune Sembon Zakura"; the role of Shizuka Gozen is played by Mimasu Tokujirô I. He also plays the roles of Nobunaga, Shinsaku and Tôkichi in the drama "Gion Sairei Shinkôki".

October 1809: Sangorô plays at the Naka no Shibai the role of Fujiya Izaemon in the drama "Keisei Awa no Naruto"; the role of Izaemon's lover Yûgiri is played by Nakayama Tomisaburô I.

November 1809: Sangorô plays at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of Nagao Kagekatsu in the drama "Honchô Nijûshikô".

August 1810: Sangorô plays at the Kado no Shibai the role of Katsugorô in the drama "Hakone Reigen Izari no Adauchi", which is produced by Arashi Tomisaburô.

September 1810: Sangorô plays in the same theater the roles of Satô Tadanobu, the fox Genkurô, Yasuke and Taira no Koremori in the drama "Yoshitsune Sembon Zakura". The roles of Osato and Shizuka Gozen are played by Kanô Minshi I and Nakayama Yoshio I. He also plays the role of Fujiya Izaemon in the drama "Keisei Gaishi Nandokoro"; the role of Izaemon's lover Yûgiri is played by Kanô Minshi I.

November 1810: Sangorô plays at the Kitagawa no Shibai the role of Katsugorô in the drama "Hakone Reigen Izari no Adauchi". He also plays the role of Ariômaru in the drama "Hime Komatsu Ne-no-Hi no Asobi".

January 1811: Sangorô plays at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of Yasuda Daishô and Torii Matasuke in the drama "Keisei Ume no Kaiga". He also plays the role of Fujiya Izaemon in the drama "Keisei Gaishi Nandokoro"; the role of Izaemon's lover Yûgiri is played by Nakayama Yoshio I.

February 1811: Sangorô plays in the same theater the role of Ogurusu Jûbei in the drama "Oriawase An'eiroku".

May 1811: tour in Nagoya; Sangorô plays at the Wakamiya no Shibai the roles of Satô Tadanobu, the fox Genkurô, Yasuke and Taira no Koremori in the drama "Yoshitsune Sembon Zakura". The roles of Osato and Shizuka Gozen are played by Nakamura Karoku I.

July 1811: Sangorô is back in Ôsaka and plays the role of Nakano Tôbei in the drama "Katakiuchi Senju no Sukedachi", which is produced by Ichikawa Zentarô at the Kado no Shibai.

September 1811: Sangorô plays in the same theater the roles of Ashikaga Tadayoshi and Senzaki Yagorô in the drama "Iroha Gura Mitsugumi Sakazuki".

November 1811: Sangorô plays at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of Tanimura Kotôji in the drama "Ômi Genji Senjin Yakata".

February 1812: Sangorô plays at the Naka no Shibai the role of Yoshitsune in the drama "Ichi-no-Tani Futaba Gunki".

Spring 1812: Sangorô plays at the Kita-Horie Ichigawa no Shibai (Ôsaka) the roles of Kameya Chûbei and Fukuoka Mitsugi in the dramas "Keisei Koi Bikyaku" and "Ise Ondo Koi no Netaba"; the roles of Chûbei's lover Umegawa and Mitsugi's lover Okon are played by Nakayama Yoshio I.

Fall 1812: Sangorô plays at the Kitano Shita-no-Mori no Shibai the role of Daihanji no Kiyosumi, Tadanobu and Tabakoya Genshichi in the dramas "Imoseyama Onna Teikin", "Yoshitsune Sembon Zakura" and "Komochi Yamamba".

November 1813: Sangorô plays at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of Ono no Yorikaze in the drama "Ono no Tôfû Aoyagi Suzuri".

January 1814: Sangorô plays in the same theater the role of Yodoya Tatsugorô in the drama "Keisei Yanagi Zakura".

Fall 1814: Sangorô goes to Edo.

November 1814: Sangorô plays at the Ichimuraza in the drama "Sekai no Hana Sugawara Denju". His stage partners are Ichikawa Danjûrô VII, Matsumoto Kôshirô V, Iwai Hanshirô V and Suketakaya Takasuke II. This kaomise program is a huge success.

January 1815: Sangorô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, is jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent).

June 1815: Sangorô plays in the drama "Ran'yatai Nitta Keizu". This production is a financial disaster for the Ichimuraza. Sangorô decides to leave the troubled theater and go back to Kamigata.

Summer 1815: tour in Nagoya.

January 1816: Sangorô plays at the Minamigawa no Shibai the roles of Bunji and Kenjô in the drama "Ôshû Adachi-ga-Hara".

February 1816: Sangorô plays at the Naka no Shibai the roles of Dankurô and Sonobe Hyôe in the drama "Sono no Yuki Koi no Kumidai", similar to "Shin Usuyuki Monogatari". He also plays the roles of Yasuke, Taira no Koremori, Satô Tadanobu and the fox Genkurô in the drama "Yoshitsune Sembon Zakura".

April 1816: Sangorô plays in the same theater the role of Hanbei in the drama "Yûzenzome Zashiki Hakkei"; the role of Hanbei's lover Koina is played by Nakamura Karoku I.

November 1816: Sangorô plays at the Kitagawa no Shibai in the kaomise program, sharing the stage with Nakamura Utaemon III, Ichikawa Ebijûrô I and Nakayama Yoshio I.

January 1817: Sangorô's rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki, sôkanjiku section ("all kanjiku") section, is hakushi-jô-jô-kichi (almost unique - superior - superior - excellent). He plays at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Mashiba Hisayoshi and Hayakawa Takakage in the drama "Keisei Chikugo-ga-Fuchi".

May 1817: Sangorô plays at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Jihizô and Shingen in the drama "Honchô Nijûshikô"; the role of Yokozô is played by Nakamura Utaemon III. He also plays the role of Yukihira in the drama "Yamatogana Ariwara Keizu".

August 1817: Sangorô plays the role of Fujiya Izaemon in the drama "Yoshidaya", which is staged in Ôsaka in the precinct of the Temma Tenjin shrine; the role of Izaemon's lover Yûgiri is played by Nakayama Yoshio I.

September 1817: Sangorô plays at the Kita-Shinchi no Shibai (Ôsaka) the roles of Shibaroku and Daihanji no Kiyosumi in the drama "Imoseyama Onna Teikin".

November 1817: Sangorô plays at the Kitagawa no Shibai the roles of Motome and Daihanji no Kiyosumi in the drama "Imoseyama Onna Teikin"; the roles of Sadaka, Hinadori and Koganosuke are played by Nakayama Yoshio I, Nakamura Matsue III and Ichikawa Shikô I. He also plays the role of Tokiyori in the drama "Onna Hachinoki".

January 1818: Sangorô plays in the same theater the roles of Takebe Genzô, Umeômaru and Terukuni in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami"; the roles of Matsuômaru and Sakuramaru are played by Kataoka Nizaemon VII and Bandô Jûtarô. He also plays the roles of Jihei and Sahei in the drama "Oriawase Tsuzure no Nishiki". His rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki is most likely shi-jô-jô-kichi (unique - superior - superior - excellent).

March 1818: Sangorô plays at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Jihizô and Shingen in the drama "Honchô Nijûshikô"; the role of Yokozô is played by Kataoka Nizaemon VII. He also plays the role of Kingyôya Kimpachi in the drama "Monogusa Tarô".

May 1818: Sangorô plays at the Kita-Shinchi no Shibai (Ôsaka) the roles of Nagai Uma-no-Kami Nobuaki and Sazen in the dramas "Ôtô-no-Miya Asahi no Yoroi" and "Ise Ondo Koi no Netaba".

August 1818: Sangorô plays at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Mori Sanzaemon Yoshinari and Nadaemon in the drama "Hachijin Shugo no Honjô". He also plays the roles of Tokiyori and Kanjûrô in the dramas "Onna Hachinoki" and "Suda no Haru Geisha Katagi".

September 1818: Sangorô plays in the same theater the role of Fujiemon in the drama "Katakiuchi Takane no Taiko".

November 1818: Sangorô plays at the Kitagawa no Shibai the role of Fujiemon in the drama "Katakiuchi Takane no Taiko". He also plays the role of Kanjûrô in the drama "Suda no Haru Geisha Katagi"; the roles of Ume no Yoshibei and Koume are played by Ichikawa Ebijûrô I and Nakamura Matsue III.

January 1819: Sangorô's rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki, is hakudai-jô-jô-kichi (almost grand - superior - superior - excellent). He plays at the Kado no Shibai the roles of the spirit of the ivy, Tôemon and Nagaoka Shingo in the new year drama "Keisei no Haru Tori". He also plays the role of Hanzawa Rokurô in the drama "Dan no Ura Kabuto Gunki".

April 1819: Sangorô plays at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Ishidô Umanojô, Teraoka Heiemon and Horibe Yajibei in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

May 1819: Sangorô plays at the Minamigawa no Shibai the roles of Mori Sanzaemon Yoshinari and Gotô Motohyôe Masatsugu in the drama "Hachijin Shugo no Honjô". He also plays the role of Tanzaemon in the drama "Heike Nyogo-ga-Shima".

August 1819: Sangorô plays at the Kado no Shibai the role of Kajiwara Genta Kagesue in the drama "Hirakana Seisuiki".

September 1819: Sangorô plays at the Kita-Horie Ichigawa no Shibai (Ôsaka) the role of Yoichi in the drama "Wada Gassen Onna Maizuru".

November 1819: Sangorô plays at the Kitagawa no Shibai the roles of Yoichi and the yakko Bansuke in the dramas "Wada Gassen Onna Maizuru" and "Yoshiwara Saiken no Zu".

1820 ~ 1821: Sangorô's popularity declines and his name does not appear on top of the bills in the major theaters.

January 1822: Sangorô plays at the Kado no Shibai the role of Umeômaru in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami"; the roles of Matsuômaru and Sakuramaru are played by Bandô Mitsugorô III and Bandô Jûtarô.

February 1823: great shûmei for the Kyôya guild; Arashi Sangorô III and his son Arashi Umatarô I respectively take the names of Arashi Raishi II and Arashi Sangorô IV at the Minamigawa no Shibai. Raishi plays the roles of Teraoka Heiemon and Kakogawa Honzô in the classic "Kanadehon Chûshingura". He also plays the roles of Takebe Genzô, Sukune Tarô and Shiratayû in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami".

Spring ~ Winter 1823: tour in Ise.

January 1824: Raishi's rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, is jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent).

1824 ~ 1833: Raishi's name appears less frequently in the theaters' banzuke.

January 1824: Raishi's rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki is kô-jô-jô-kichi (meritorious - superior - superior - excellent).

November 1826: Raishi plays at the Minamigawa no Shibai in the drama "Hade Kurabe Ise Monogatari".

January 1830: Raishi plays at the Minamigawa no Shibai the roles of Bunji and Kenjô in the drama "Ôshû Adachi-ga-Hara".

1833: Raishi most likely dies this year, although his name appears in the 1834 hyôbanki.

Comments:

Arashi Sangorô III was a talented tachiyaku actor and the worthy heir of his amazing father Arashi Sangorô II. His forte were wagoto and budôgoto roles.

Arashi Sangorô III's best roles: Fujiya Izaemon, Tadanobu/Yasuke/Koremori ("Yoshitsune Sembon Zakura"), Tabakoya Genshichi/Sakata Kurando Tokiyuki ("Komochi Yamamba"), Kajiwara Genta Kagesue ("Hirakana Seisuiki").
