Obituary: the actor Ichikawa En'ô II (1939~2023), who used to be Ichikawa Ennosuke III from May 1963 to May 2012, passed away of arrhythmia the 13th of September 2023. 2023 is a terrible year for the Omodakaya guild with the passing away of Ichikawa En'ô II, the suicide of Ichikawa En'ô II's younger brother Ichikawa Danshirô IV and the judicial affair involving Ichikawa Ennosuke IV. Ichikawa Ennosuke III was a stage giant from the beginning of the 1970s to the first half of the 2000s. I had the chance to enjoy his Summer performances at the Kabukiza and I will never forget him approaching the 4th floor, where I was seated, as a flying Ishikawa Goemon doing a chûnori. He was so close and I was so impressed that the 'Omodakaya!!!' I wanted to shout as kakegoe could not leave my throat.

The 39th Haiyûsai (literally Actors Festival) will happen at the National Theatre the 28th of September 2023 with most of the Kabuki actors. This special gala is sponsored by the Japan Actors Association. It is usually a mix of classic dances, newly-created or newly-revised dramas and ... the most appreciated item in the program: all the refreshment stands which are managed by the actors. If you are lucky, your coffee will be made and given to you by one of the top Kabuki stars. Actors Festival is more a parody of Kabuki full of funny surprises than a set of real Kabuki performances.
