Career:

1792: he starts his career as an iroko at the Kado no Shibai, disciple of Fujikawa Tomokichi I, who gives him the name of Fujikawa Katsujirô.

November 1804: Fujikawa Katsujirô takes the name of Fujikawa Tomosaburô and becomes zamoto, producing in Kyôto the kaomise drama "Ichiyô Ôgi no Kachidoki".

16 June 1808: his master Fujikawa Tomokichi I dies.

Winter 1810: Tomosaburô goes to Edo, in the company of the actors Ichikawa Ichizô I, Asao Yûjirô I, Ôtani Monzô I, Kanô San'emon II, Yamamura Giemon III, Sanjô Namie II, Ichikawa Tsurusaburô I and Bandô Nariemon.

January 1810: Fujikawa Tomosaburô takes the name of Fujikawa Tomokichi II at the Moritaza, playing the roles of Otoki and Princess Tomotsuru in the drama "Hachijin Shugo no Honjô".

September 1810: Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Komochi Yamamba" is staged for the first time in Edo, at the Nakamuraza; Tomokichi plays the role of Princess Omodaka [casting].

April 1811: Tomokichi plays at the Moritaza the roles of Osono and Rikiya in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

September 1811: Tomokichi plays in the same theater the roles of Minosaku, Katsuyori and Otane in the drama "Honchô Nijûshikô".

April 1814: Tomokichi plays at the Nakamuraza the roles of Kaoyo Gozen and Oishi in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

May 1814: Tomokichi plays in the same theater the role of Okaji in the drama "Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami".

June 1814: Tomokichi plays in the same theater the role of Azuma in the drama "Futatsu Chôchô Kuruwa Nikki".

July 1814: Tomokichi plays in the same theater the role of Okon in the drama "Ise Ondo Koi no Netaba"; the role of Okon's lover Mitsugi is played by Onoe Matsusuke II.

September 1815: Tomokichi plays at the Kawarazakiza the roles of Kaoyo Gozen, Osono and Tonase in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

Fall 1815: Tomokichi goes back to Ôsaka.

November 1815: Fujikawa Tomokichi II takes the name of Fujikawa Kayû II at the Kado no Shibai, playing the roles of Kaoyo, Ukihashi and Okita in the drama "Taiheiki Chûshin Kôshaku"; Kayû was a haimyô used by Fujikawa Tomokichi I, who is therefore considered as Fujikawa Kayû I.

October 1817: Kayû plays at the Kita-Horie Ichigawa no Shibai (Ôsaka) the roles of Okaru, Osono and Tonase in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

Fall 1818: Kayû goes to Kyôto.

November 1818: Kayû plays at the Minamigawa no Shibai the roles of Somenoi and Kôemon's wife in the drama "Tengajaya".

Fall 1819: Kayû goes to Edo.

November 1819: Fujikawa Kayû II takes back the name of Fujikawa Tomokichi II at the Tamagawaza, playing in the kaomise drama "Nana Komachi Yagura no Amagoi".

March 1820: premiere at the Tamagawaza of Tsuruya Namboku IV's drama "Sakura Butai Maku no Datezome"; Tomokichi plays the role of Okinoi [casting].

Fall 1821: Tomokichi goes to Kyôto.

November 1821: Tomokichi plays at the Kitagawa no Shibai the roles of Kaoyo and Orei in the drama "Taiheiki Chûshin Kôshaku".

November 1822: premiere at the Kitagawa no Shibai of the drama "Kajiwara Heizô Kidai no Ishikiri", a new version of the third act of "Miura no Ôsuke Ôbai Tazuna", revised by Kanazawa Ryûgoku; Tomokichi plays the role of Kozue [casting].

January 1829: Tomokichi's rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, is jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent).

Summer 1833: Tomokichi goes to Edo.

July 1833: Tomokichi plays at the Ichimuraza the role of Osato in the drama "Yoshitsune Sembon Zakura". He suddenly falls ill after 4 days of performance and has to retire. He most likely died the following year.

Comments:

Fujikawa Tomokichi II was a talented and popular onnagata actor, who achieved fame for himself not only in his native Kamigata but also in Edo. His yagô, Edoya, showed his interest for the Eastern Capital. He was equally at home in sewamono and jidaimono dramas. His field of excellence was nuregoto.
