Career:

1703 ~ 1721: born in Ise. He starts his career in Kyôto as a disciple of the actor Hagino Yaegiri, who gives him the name of Hagino Izaburô and lets him play koyaku roles.

March 1723: Hagino Izaburô goes to Edo and takes the name of Ogino Izaburô I at the Ichimuraza, achieving a great success by performing in the drama "Neirishi Soga".

November 1723: Izaburô becomes wakashugata and plays at the Ichimuraza the role of Watanabe Tsuna in the kaomise drama "Hinagata Shûten Dôji".

January 1724: Izaburô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, wakashugata section, is jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent). He plays in the same theater the role of Danzaburô in the new year drama "Yomeiri Izu Nikki".

November 1724: Izaburô plays at the Ichimuraza the role of Masayuki in the kaomise drama "Bankoku Taiheiki", which welcomes in Edo the Kamigata actor Matsushima Hyôtarô.

November 1725: Izaburô plays at the Ichimuraza in the kaomise drama "Semimaru Onna Moyô".

November 1727: Izaburô plays at the Ichimuraza the role of Imagawa Motoyoshi's daughter Mangetsu in the kaomise drama "Goshozome Kôyô Gunki", which celebrates the return in Edo of the actor Bandô Hikosaburô I.

November 1728: Izaburô becomes wakaonnagata and plays at the Ichimuraza the role of Sanuki no Tsubone in the kaomise drama "Kikusui Yoshino no Dairi".

November 1729: Izaburô moves to the Nakamuraza and plays the role of Okuni and a young man in the tanzen style in the kaomise drama "Ume Goyomi Konrei Nagoya".

January 1730: Izaburô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, is jô-jô-(hanshiro)kichi (superior - superior - almost excellent).

His stage partners are Ôtani Hiroji I, Segawa Kikunojô I, Segawa Kikujirô I, Nakajima Mihoemon I, Arashi Otohachi I, Narumi Goroshirô I, Hayakawa Denshirô, Nakamura Kichibei I and Kameya Jûjirô (who arrives from Kamigata).

January 1737: Izaburô plays in the same theater the role of Soga Gorô Tokimune in the new year program "Hatsu Hikage Maizuru Soga"; the role of Soga Jûrô Sukenari is played by Kameya Jûjirô.

November 1741: Izaburô goes to Ôsaka and plays the role of Kikusui Tamonnosuke in the kaomise drama "Kogane no Yakata Bandai no Kame", which is produced by Fujikawa Heikurô's son Fujikawa Kamenoi at the Kado no Shibai.

January 1745: Izaburô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, is jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent). He plays in the same theater the role of Soga Gorô Tokimune in the new year drama "Hagoromo Kotobuki Soga". His stage partners in the roles of Soga Jûrô Sukenari and Kudô Saemon Suketsune are Nakamura Shichisaburô II and Ichikawa Ebizô II.

November 1745: Izaburô moves to the Ichimuraza and plays the role of Matsuura Gorô in the kaomise program "Onna Kusunoki Yosooi Kagami", which celebrates the arrival in Edo of the Kamigata onnagata Yoshizawa Ayame II.

January 1746: Izaburô plays in the same theater the role of Soga Jûrô Sukenari in the new year drama "Kikeba Mukashi Soga Monogatari"; the roles of Soga Gorô Tokimune and Kudô Saemon Suketsune are played by Ichimura Kamezô I and Bandô Hikosaburô I.

November 1746: Izaburô plays at the Ichimuraza in the kaomise drama "Aioi Izu Nikki", which welcomes in Edo the actors Yamamoto Kyôshirô I and Iwai Hanshirô III.

January 1747: Izaburô plays in the same theater the role of Yaoya Oshichi in the new year drama "Tamakushige Yosooi Soga".

March 1747: the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami" is performed for the first time in Edo, at the Ichimuraza; Izaburô plays the role of Takebe Genzô [casting].

May 1747: his father-in-law Ôtani Hiroji I dies.

Summer 1747: Izaburô falls ill and has to stop acting. He dies the next year in February.

Comments:

Ogino Izaburô I was a talented actor, who started his career in Kyôto but moved to Edo at the age of 20 and became a popular wakashugata and wakaonnagata actor. He turned to tachiyaku roles from 1738 and was able to perform roles in the opposite styles of aragoto and wagoto. He also excelled in budôgoto roles. One of his best roles was Soga Gorô Tokimune in the new year sogamono.
