Comments:

Ichikawa Hakuen I was one of the dominant tachiyaku of the An'ei, Tenmei and Kansei eras, excelling as jitsugotoshi, katakiyaku, aragotoshi and even onnagata. He did not attend his father's famous acting classes, preferring to follow his own way. He proved to the Kabuki world that he was worthy to hold the prestigious name of Ichikawa Danjűr˘ and contributed a great deal to the preservation of the best roles created by Ichikawa Danjűr˘ II or Ichikawa Danjűr˘ IV.

Ichikawa Hakuen I's best roles: Kud˘ Saemon Suketsune, Taira no Kagekiyo, ďboshi Yuranosuke ("Kanadehon Chűshingura"), the superhero in the "Shibaraku" scene.
