11th lunar month of 1711: he started his career as a wakashugata in Edo at the Yamamuraza, where he performed in the kaomise drama "Shida Konjiki no Uroko".

Fall 1716: Kantarô became wakaonnagata.

11th lunar month of 1716: Kantarô played at the Ichimuraza the role of Shinobu in the kaomise drama "Yoroi Kurabe Ôshû Gane".

11th lunar month of 1719: Kantarô performed at the Moritaza in the kaomise drama "Banmin Taiheiki".

1st lunar month of 1720: first Kabuki adaptation of Chikamatsu Monzaemon's puppet theater shinjûmono "Shinjû Kasane Izutsu", which was written in 1707. The same play was simultaneously produced in the 3 Edo theaters and commemorated the 16th anniversary (17th memorial service) of the suicide of the couple Tokubê and Ofusa, whose roles were played by Ichikawa Danjûrô II and Kantarô at the Moritaza [more details].

1st lunar month of 1728: Kantarô played in the same theater the role of Ôiso no Tora in the new year sogamono "Soga Hôraisan"; the roles of Kudô Saemon Suketsune, Soga Gorô Tokimune, Soga Jûrô Sukenari and Kewaizaka no Shôshô were played by Ogawa Zengorô I, Ichikawa Danjûrô II, Sawamura Sôjûrô I and Kirinami Onoe.

11th lunar month of 1746: He gave his name to his adopted son Sanjô Kosaburô, who became Sanjô Kantarô III, and took the name of Hanai Saizaburô III at the Nakamuraza, where he played the role of Sagami no Jirô in the kaomise drama "Tenchi Taiheiki".

1750s: when his popularity started to fade away, he became kashagata and tôdori at the Nakamuraza at the beginning of the Hôreki era. He definitively retired from the Kabuki world in 1755.

3rd day of the 4th lunar month of 1763 [1]: Saizaburô died.

Comments:

Hanai Saizaburô III made a fame for himself in Edo as an onnagata, excelling in nuregoto. As a tachiyaku, he never reached the jô-jô-kichi rank (at his best level, he was jô-jô-(hanshiro)kichi). As an onnagata, he stayed at the jô-jô-kichi level for 13 seasons from 1723 up to the 1735.
