Career:

1716: son of Yamashita Kamenojô I, his name was Kametarô.

11th lunar month of 1722: he made his debut on stage in Kyôto, receiving the name of Yamashita Kamematsu I and performing in a dance within the kaomise drama "Ôbashira Kogane no Sazare Ishi" which was produced at Miyako Mandayû's theater by Segawa Kikunojô I.

1723: Kamematsu became iroko.

Fall 1726: Kamematsu went to Edo with Arashi Sangorô I.

11th lunar month of 1726: Kamematsu performed as an iroko at the Ichimuraza in the kaomise drama "Hinazuru Tokiwa Genji". He met and most likely became a disciple of Sanjô Kantarô II during his stay in Edo.

1732: Kamematsu became wakaonnagata.

Beginning of the Genbun era: he took the name of Yamashita Kamenojô III and spent a few years performing in tabi shibai. He went back to Kamigata at the beginning of the 1740s.

11th lunar month of 1743: he took the name of Sanjô Mankatsu in Kyôto at Hoteiya Umenojô's theater, playing the role of Naniwazu in the kaomise drama "Yomeiri Ôshimadai".

1st lunar month of 1744: Mankatsu's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual].

Fall 1744: Mankatsu settled in Ôsaka.

11th lunar month of 1744: Mankatsu played at the Kado no Shibai the role of the keisei Ôyodo in the kaomise drama "Yamazaki Yojibê Imayô Sugata", which was produced by Arashi Sanjûrô II.

1st lunar month of 1745: Mankatsu's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was one black stroke above jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual].

5th lunar month of 1745: he took the name of Sanjô Namie I in Ôsaka; he played at the Kado no Shibai the role of the ghost of the keisei Yako in the drama "Keisei Otogi Bôko".

11th lunar month of 1745: Namie played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Sanai's nyôbô Otaka (in reality Sanada Yoichi's kôshitsu) in the kaomise drama "Onna Musha Ukisu Gassen", which was produced by Ichiyama Sukegorô I.

12th lunar month of 1745: the drama "Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami" was performed for the first time in Ôsaka, simultaneously in the three major theaters of the city, which started a competition for the best performance; Namie played the role of Okaji at the Naka no Shibai [casting].

1st lunar month of 1746: Namie's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was jô-jô-(hanshiro)kichi [visual].

11th lunar month of 1746: Namie performed at the Naka no Shibai in the kaomise drama "Genji Musha Hinode Ôgi", which was produced by Ichikawa Ryûzô.

11th lunar month of 1749: Namie performed at the Ônishi no Shibai in Izumiya Shôzô's kaomise drama "Kotobuki Kogane no Kachi Ikusa", which was produced by Mimasu Daigorô I, welcomed back in Ôsaka Iwai Hanshirô III and celebrated the shûmei of Murayama Heijûrô IV.

12th lunar month of 1750: Namie played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Okichi in the drama "Keisei Tôyama Zakura" (similar to Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Keisei Hangonkô"), which was produced by the zamoto Nakamura Jûzô I for the nadai Shioya Kuroemon [casting].

11th lunar month of 1751: Namie played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Goemon's wife Oritsu in the kaomise drama "Sode Nikki Futatsu Domoe", which was produced by Nakamura Jûzô I; the role of Ishikawa Goemon was played by Mimasu Daigorô I.

11th lunar month of 1752: Namie played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Kumagai's wife Sagami in the kaomise drama "Ichi-no-Tani Futaba Gunki", which was produced by Nakamura Jûzô I and celebrated the shûmei of Somekawa Konohê I and Someyama Sôjûrô; the role of Kumagai Jirô Naozane was played by Ichikawa Danzô III.

1st lunar month of 1753: Namie's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent) [visual]. He shared the same rank with Yoshizawa Sakinosuke II, Arashi Koroku I and Nakamura Kiyosaburô I.

11th lunar month of 1753: Namie performed at the Ônishi no Shibai in the kaomise drama "Taihei Kiso Monogatari".

1st lunar month of 1754: Namie's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, fell two black strokes below jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1754: Namie performed at the Naka no Shibai in the kaomise drama "Amaterasu Ômikami Iwado no Akebono", which was produced by Arashi San'emon IV.

1st lunar month of 1755: Namie's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, fell to jô-jô-(hanshiro)kichi [visual].

11th lunar month of 1755: Namie played at the Ônishi no Shibai the role of Shigetada's nyôbô Hatsuse in the kaomise drama "Genpei Ôgi Awase", which was produced by Anegawa Shinshirô II.

12th lunar month of 1755: Namie played in the same theater the roles of Masatsura's nyôbô Makiginu and the keisei Tamanoi in the drama "Kayou Kami Kuruwa Nikki"; the role of Kusunoki Masatsura was played by Ichikawa Danzô III.

11th lunar month of 1756: Namie played at the Kado no Shibai the role of Sekijo in Namiki Eisuke I's kaomise drama "Taihei Yamato Monogatari", which was produced by Anegawa Daikichi I.

1st lunar month of 1757: Namie played in the same theater the role of Yamana Saemon's nyôbô Kiyotaki in the ni-no-kawari drama "Keisei Kongenki"; the role of Yamana Saemon was played by Nakamura Jûzô I.

Fall 1757: Namie went to Kyôto.

11th lunar month of 1757: Namie played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of Sakuragi Gozen in the kiri kyôgen drama "Kitano no Goengi Senbon Ume", which was produced by Sawamura Kunitarô I and Somematsu Matsujirô.

1st lunar month of 1758: Namie's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was jô-jô-(hanshiro)kichi [visual]. First Kabuki adaptation of the puppet theater drama "Gion Sairei Shinkôki", which was simultaneously produced at the Minamigawa no Shibai [casting] and the Kitagawa no Shibai [casting]. It used its real title at the former theater but it was entitled "Keisei Niwatoriyama" at the latter theater; Namie played in the former theater the role of Zesai's nyôbô.

11th lunar month of 1758: Namie played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the role of Tezuka's nyôbô in the kaomise drama "Homare Musha Senri no Kachidoki", which was produced by Sawamura Kunitarô I and Somematsu Matsujirô; the role of Tezuka Tarô was played by Bandô Toyosaburô I.

1st lunar month of 1759: Namie's rank in the Kyôto hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, fell to one black stroke above jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual]. Namie played in the same theater the role of Oshizu Gozen in the new year ni-no-kawari drama "Keisei Kachôzan".

Fall 1759: Namie went to Ôsaka.

11th lunar month of 1759: Namie played at the Kado no Shibai the role of Daigaku's wife Teriha in Namiki Shôzô I's kaomise drama "Saiwai Genji Chôkyû no Maki", which was produced by Nakayama Bunshichi I, celebrated the comeback in Kamigata of Nakamura Tomijûrô I and the shûmei of Arashi Koisa II.

1st lunar month of 1760: Namie's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was only one black stroke below jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent) [visual].

11th lunar month of 1760: Namie played at the Kado no Shibai the role of Teriha in Namiki Shôzô I's kaomise drama "Ikinyorai Kogane no Kaomise", which was produced by Nakayama Bunshichi I.

1st lunar month of 1761: Namie's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, fell to jô-jô-(hanshiro)kichi [visual]. Premiere at the Kado no Shibai of Namiki Shôzô I's ni-no-kawari drama "Kiritarô Tengu no Sakamori"; Namie played the role of the ama midai [more details].

4th lunar month of 1761: Namie played in the same theater the role of Tsukubane in the drama "Ashiya Dôman Ôuchi Kagami".

11th lunar month of 1761: Namie performed at the Kado no Shibai in the kaomise drama "Sôtsui Hoshi Kamakura Kagami", which was produced by Nakayama Bunshichi I.

4th lunar month of 1762: Namie played in the same theater the role of Watônai's mother in the drama "Kokusen'ya Gassen"; the role of Watônai was played by Nakayama Shinkurô I.

11th lunar month of 1762: no record in any Kamigata kaomise.

11th lunar month of 1763: Namie performed at the Kado no Shibai in the kaomise drama "Kachidoki Aun no Ishizue", which was produced by Nakayama Bunshichi I and celebrated the shûmei of Sanogawa Hanazuma III.

1st lunar month of 1764: Namie's rank in the Ôsaka hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was jô-jô-(hanshiro)kichi [visual].

3rd lunar month of 1764: Namie played in the same theater the role of Hisakuni's okugata in the ni-no-kawari drama "Nagasaki Maruyama Saiken no Zu".

9th lunar month of 1764: première in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai of "Oriawase Tsuzure no Nishiki", based on the puppet drama "Katakiuchi Tsuzure no Nishiki", which was produced by Nakayama Bunshichi I and celebrated the 16th anniversary (17th memorial service) of the passing away of the star Anegawa Shinshirô I. A similar play was staged one day later under a different title, "Hare Kosode Tsuzure no Nishiki", at the Naka no Shibai [casting]. The competition for the best performance and the best line-up was open between the 2 theaters. At the end, the performance at the Kado no Shibai was more successful than the one at the Naka no Shibai; Namie played at the Kado no Shibai the role of Ohari Osoyo [casting].

11th lunar month of 1764: Namie played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Tadafumi's okugata Hanazono in the kaomise drama "Tatsu no Miya Yunzei Kotobuki", which was produced by Mimasu Daigorô I.

5th lunar month of 1765: Namie played in the same theater the role of Sabu's nyôbô "Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami".

11th lunar month of 1765: Namie played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Daigaku's kôshitsu Omachi in the kaomise drama "Ôzatsuki Shuen no Kachidoki" [1], which was produced by Mimasu Daigorô I.

1766: tour in Ise.

11th lunar month of 1766: Namie performed in Nagoya at the Ôsu no Shibai; no record afterwards.

Comments:

Sanjô Namie I was outstanding in keisei, nyôbô or okugata roles. His forte was onna budô and he was also a good musician. He was jô-jô-kichi only for one season (1753) and he most likely died at the end of the Meiwa era.

[1] There were two zamoto at the Naka no Shibai, Mimasu Daigorô I and Nakamura Utaemon I, and there were two kaomise dramas produced in this theater. Nakamura Utaemon I produced the two dramas and Mimasu Daigorô I produced only the second drama. The two dramas had a different casting but used the same title "Ôzatsuki Shuen no Kachidoki".
