Career:

1763: born in Ôsaka.

Fall 1769: he settled in Edo with his father Yamashita Kinsaku II.

11th lunar month of 1771: he made his debut on stage, receiving the name of Yamashita Kintarô and performing as a koyaku at the Moritaza in the kaomise drama "Fukikaete Tsuki no Yoshiwara", which welcomed in Edo the Kamigata actor Nakamura Jûzô II.

1776: he became wakaonnagata.

11th lunar month of 1779: Yamashita Kintarô took the name of Yamashita Mangiku I at the Nakamuraza, playing the role of Princess Tomozuru in the kaomise drama "Kaeribana Eiyû Taiheiki".

11th lunar month of 1780: Mangiku played at the Nakamuraza the role of an onna hinin in the kaomise drama "Kite Kaeru Nishiki no Wakayaka".

5th lunar month of 1780: Mangiku played in the same theater the role of the courtesan Otsuyu in the drama "Koi Nyôbô Somewake Tazuna".

11th lunar month of 1781: Mangiku played at the Nakamuraza the role of Princess Chiharu in the kaomise drama "Shitennô Tonoi no Kisewata".

1st lunar month of 1782: Mangiku played in the same theater the role of Kewaizaka no Shôshô in the new year sogamono drama "Nanakusa Yosooi Soga"; the role of Shôshô's lover Soga Gorô Tokimune was played by Ichikawa Monnosuke II.

11th lunar month of 1782: Mangiku performed at the Nakamuraza in the kaomise drama "Godai Genji Mitsugi no Furisode", which celebrated the shûmei of Ichikawa Ebizô IV.

11th lunar month of 1783: Mangiku performed at the Ichimuraza in the kaomise drama "Kuruma Gakari Tekuda no Gunbai".

11th lunar month of 1784: Mangiku played at the Nakamuraza the role of Masako-no-Mae in the kaomise drama "Ôakinai Hiru-ga-Kojima", which celebrated the shûmei of Sanogawa Ichimatsu III and the return in Edo of Ôtani Hiroemon III.

8th lunar month of 1785: Mangiku played in the same theater the roles of Yae and Tonami in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami"; the roles of Yae's husband Sakuramaru and Tonami's husband Takebe Genzô were played by Ichikawa Yaozô III and Sawamura Sôjûrô III.

11th lunar month of 1785: Shirojûrô played at the Kiriza the role of Princess Hanazono in the kaomise drama "Otokoyama Furisode Genji", which celebrated the shûmei of Bandô Mitsugorô II.

1st lunar month of 1786: Mangiku played in the same theater the roles of the koshimoto Mifune and Tsukisayo in the new year sogamono drama "Ôkazari Kotobuki Soga". The program opens the 17th day and was extremely successful but a fire destroyed the Kiriza the 21st day.

11th lunar month of 1786: Mangiku played at the Kiriza the roles of the shirabyôshi Kazaori and Princess Tatsu in the kaomise drama "Mutsu no Hana Izu no Hataage", which celebrated the shûmei of Nakayama Kojûrô VI who took back the name of Nakamura Nakazô I.

1st lunar month of 1787: Mangiku played in the same theater the role of Ôiso no Tora in the new year drama "Yuki Nazuna Saiwai Soga"; the role of Tora's lover Soga Jûrô Sukenari was played by Asao Tamesaburô.

11th lunar month of 1787: Mangiku played at the Kiriza the role of Sano's nyôbô Shiratae in the kaomise drama "Sanga no Shô Mutsu no Hanayome".

1st lunar month of 1788: Mangiku performed in the same theater in the new year sogamono drama "Keisei Natori Soga".

11th lunar month of 1788: Mangiku played at the Nakamuraza the role of Tanba Koyuki in Sakurada Jisuke I's kaomise drama "Tôzumô Hana no Edokata", which celebrated the return in Edo of the actor Nakamura Nakazô I.

1st lunar month of 1789: Mangiku played in the same theater the role of Ninomiya in the new year sogamono drama "Edo Fuji Wakayagi Soga".

11th lunar month of 1789: Mangiku performed at the Nakamuraza in the kaomise drama "Komachi-mura Shibai no Shôgatsu".

1st lunar month of 1790: Mangiku played in the same theater the role of Ôiso no Tora in the new year sogamono drama "Haru no Nishiki Datezome Soga"; the role of Tora's lover Soga Jûrô Sukenari was played by Ichikawa Komazô III.

11th lunar month of 1790: Mangiku played at the Kawarasakiza the roles of Kyô-no-Kimi and Shizuka Gozen in the kaomise drama "Daidanna Kanjinchô".

1st lunar month of 1791: Mangiku's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, wakaonnagata section, was jô-jô-(shiro)hankichi (superior - superior - (white) half excellent) [visual].

4th lunar month of 1791: Mangiku appeared on stage for the last time, in Edo at the Kawarasakiza, where he performed in the nibanme of the new year drama "Hatsu Midori Saiwai Soga"; he fell ill and was replaced by Sawamura Tamagashiwa.

13th day of the 5th lunar month of 1791 [1]: Mangiku died in Edo.

Comments:

Yamashita Mangiku I was an onnagata actor, born in Ôsaka but trained in Edo. He was active from the beginning of the 1770s to the beginning of the 1790s. He could have been Yamashita Kinsaku III but he unfortunately died more than 8 years before his father Yamashita Kinsaku II.

[1] The 13th day of the 5th lunar month of the 3rd year of the Kansei era was the 14th of June 1791 in the western calendar.
