Dates of birth and death unknown. Son of Ichikawa Tomozô II. His first stage names were Ichikawa Danko II (old line) and Ichikawa Nenosuke. He took the name of Ichikawa Tomozô III in March 1819, playing at the Nakamuraza the role of Kampera Monbei in the drama "Sukeroku". He became disciple of Ichikawa Danjûrô VII and took the name of Ichikawa Dankurô I in November 1828. Then, he took the name of Ichikawa Ichiyû in March 1833, playing at the Ichimuraza the role of Sonezaki Bangorô in the drama "Katsumi Zukin Korowa Yoshibei". His relationship to late Sawamura Shirogorô II (who died the 6th of July 1832) is unclear, but we know that he finally got the right to take the name of Sawamura Shirogorô III in November 1838, playing at the Kawarazakiza the roles of the yakko Tomohei, Taira no Munemori and Kiheiji in the drama "Tokinariya Heike no Yozakari". He never achieved stardom and his last recorded performance was in November 1841 at the Kawarazakiza, where he played two minor roles in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami". He was mainly a katakiyaku actor and was better in sewamono than in jidaimono.
