Career:

1783 ~ 1804: born in Kamigata. He started his career as a disciple of Mimasu Daigorô III and his first stage name was Mimasu Yonezô. He did his training in hama shibai.

1804: he received the name of Mimasu Yonegorô.

11th lunar month of 1813: he received the name of Mimasu Daitarô.

11th lunar month of 1815: he was allowed to use one of the stage names used by late Mihogi Gizaemon II and took the name of Fujimatsu Sanjûrô II. He also used as a stage name the name of Fujimatsu Sotô (Sotô was the haimyô of late Mihogi Gizaemon II).

11th lunar month of 1822: he became disciple of Ichikawa Ebijûrô I and received the name of Ichikawa Sukejûrô IV.

17th day of the 10th lunar month of 1824 [2]: his first master Mimasu Daigorô III died.

16th day of the 7th lunar month of 1827 [3]: his second master Ichikawa Ebijûrô I died.

1st lunar month of 1838: Ichikawa Sukejûrô IV took the name of Ichikawa Sukejurô in Ôsaka at the Naka no Shibai, playing the roles of En'ya Hangan and Kakogawa Honzô in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

11th lunar month of 1839: Sukejurô played at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Munekiyo and the yakko Chienai in the drama "Kiichi Hôgen Sanryaku no Maki". He also played the roles of Shigetada and Hansai in "Akoya" and "Katsuragawa Renri no Shigarami"; the role of Akoya was played by Ichikawa Danzô V.

1st lunar month of 1840: Sukejurô's rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was jô-jô-kichi (superior - superior - excellent) [visual].

3rd lunar month of 1840: Sukejurô played at the Kado no Shibai the roles of and Ishidô Umanojô, Kakogawa Honzô and Uekiya Mokuemon in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

8th lunar month of 1841: Sukejurô played at the Kado no Shibai the role of Endô Sôemon in the drama "Katakiuchi Sôzenji Baba".

9th lunar month of 1841: Sukejurô moved to the Ônishi no Shibai and played the role of Hosokawa Masamoto in the drama "Tenjiku Tokubê Ikoku Banashi"; his main stage partners in the roles of Tenjiku Tokubê and the zatô Kikuichi was the star Onoe Kikugorô III. Sukejurô also played the role of Tamiya Iemon in the drama "Yotsuya Kaidan", which commemorated the 26th anniversary (27th memorial service) of late Onoe Shôroku I.

3rd lunar month of 1845: Sukejurô played in the same theater the role of Kyôya Mansuke in the drama "Tengajaya".

5th lunar month of 1847: Sukejurô played in the same theater the role of Tsuribune Sabu in the drama "Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami"; the roles of Danshichi Kurobê and Issun Tokubê were played by Nakamura Shikan III and Kataoka Gadô II.

3rd lunar month of 1848: Sukejurô played in the same theater the roles of the sumô wrestler Akizuka, Gonbê and Sakae Gozen in the drama "Meiboku Sendai Hagi". He also played the role of Hansai in "Katsuragawa Renri no Shigarami".

11th lunar month of 1848: Sukejurô played in the same theater the role of Komatsuya Sôemon in the drama "Koi Momiji Ogura no Shikishi".

1st lunar month of 1849: Sukejurô played at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Sonobe Hyôe and Gorobê Masamune in the drama "Hana Fubuki Uta no Nagokoro" (similar to "Shin Usuyuki Monogatari").

4th lunar month of 1849: Sukejurô played in the same theater the roles of Kakogawa Honzô, Kô no Moronô and Yajibei in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

8th lunar month of 1849: Sukejurô played at the Chikugo no Shibai the role of Oda Harunaga in Chikamatsu Yanagi's drama "Ehon Taikôki".

11th lunar month of 1850: Sukejurô played at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Takebe Genzô, Fujiwara no Shihei, Kakuju and Shiratayû in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami".

1st lunar month of 1851: Sukejurô played at the Minamigawa no Shibai the roles of Wadasaku, Kujaku Saburô and Genzô in the drama "Tenmangû Natane no Gokû". He also played the roles of Takemura Sadanoshin and Yahei in "Koi Nyôbô Somewake Tazuna" and "Urami no Samezaya"; the roles of Hachirobê and Otsuma in the latter drama were played by Arashi Rikaku II and Nakamura Tomijûrô II.

2nd lunar month of 1851: Sukejurô played in Sakai the roles of Shigemori and Shunkan in the drama "Hime Komatsu Ne-no-Hi no Asobi"; the roles of Chidori and Oyasu were played by Nakamura Tomijûrô II.

9th lunar month of 1851: Sukejurô played at the Naka no Shibai the roles of Fujiwara no Shihei, Kakuju and Shiratayû in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami".

11th lunar month of 1851: Sukejurô played in the same theater the roles of Kiso Senjô Yoshikata and Senoo Jûrô Kaneyasu in the drama "Genpei Nunobiki no Taki".

10th lunar month of 1852: Sukejurô played at the Kado no Shibai the role of Watanabe Gekizaemon in the drama "Meiboku Sendai Hagi". He also played the roles of Sôroku and Shichirobê in the drama "Go Taiheiki Shiraishi Banashi".

3rd lunar month of 1853: Sukejurô played in the same theater the roles of Ishidô Umanojô, the shôya Jin'emon, Kakogawa Honzô, Hanagasa Buemon and Yajibei in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

10th lunar month of 1853: Sukejurô played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Heisaku in the drama "Igagoe Dôchû Sugoroku" ("Numazu"); the roles of Jûbê and Oyone were played by Mimasu Daigorô IV and Nakamura Daikichi III.

11th lunar month of 1853: Sukejurô played at the Kitagawa no Shibai the roles of Ishidô Umanojô and Kakogawa Honzô in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura". He went back to Ôsaka to play at the Kado no Shibai the roles of Yoshioka Kiichi Hôgen and Kansuke in the drama "Kiichi Hôgen Sanryaku no Maki" and "Honchô Nijûshikô".

1st lunar month of 1855: Sukejurô's rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki, tachiyaku section, was shin-jô-jô-kichi (truly - superior - superior - excellent) [Visual].

1st lunar month of 1856: Sukejurô played at the Chikugo no Shibai the role of Tosa Shôgen Mitsunobu in the drama "Domo Mata"; the role of Matahei was played by Arashi Rikaku II.

3rd lunar month of 1856: Sukejurô played in the same theater the role of the curio dealer Jinza in the drama "Sumidagawa Gonichi no Omokage"; the role of Hôkaibô was played by Arashi Rikaku II.

11th lunar month of 1857: Sukejurô played at the Kado no Shibai the role of Yoshioka Kiichi Hôgen in the drama "Kiichi Hôgen Sanryaku no Maki".

1st lunar month of 1858: Sukejurô played in the same theater the roles of the sumô wrestler Anado and Matsukawa Shinjûrô in the new year drama "Keisei Hanabusa Zôshi". He also played the role of Jô no Kurô Sukekuni in the drama "Wada Gassen Onna Maizuru"; the role of Hangaku was played by Arashi Rikan III.

1st lunar month of 1859: Sukejurô's rank in the Kamigata hyôbanki, "a threesome of veterans" section, was kô-jô-jô-kichi (meritorious - superior - superior - excellent) [Visual]. The two others actors in this trio were Kataoka Ichizô I and Arashi Sankô II. He played at the Naka no Shibai the role of Katajima Kôjûrô in the drama "Keisei Okuni Kabuki". He also played the role of Rôikkan in "Kokusen'ya Gassen"; the role of Watônai was played by Jitsukawa Enzaburô I. Sukejurô did his isse ichidai peformance, playing in the same theater the role of Matsunami Yukie in the drama "Sangoku Ichi Sato no Nishikie".

3rd lunar month of 1859: Sukejurô appeared on stage for the last time, in Ôsaka at the Naka no Shibai, playing the role of Kakuju in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami". Then, he retired from the Kabuki world.

13th day of the 9th lunar month of 1860 [1]: Sukejurô died in Ôsaka.

Comments:

Ichikawa Sukejurô was prominent 19th century Kamigata tachiyaku actor, who achieved fame for himself in Ôsaka in the 1840s and the 1850s. He was the zagashira of the Ônishi no Shibai for quite a long time. He was said to be wealthy and was the owner of a successful bathhouse located near the Ebisu Bridge in Ôsaka.
