Career:

Before 1798: his first stage name was Mizuki Otozô. He did his training in kodomo shibai and miyaji shibai.

22nd day of the 3rd lunar month of 1798 [2]: his father Nakamura Tôzô I died.

1800 [3]: he took the name of Mizuki Tôzô II.

1803: he became disciple of Nakamura Utaemon III and received the name of Nakamura Utagorô.

6th lunar month of 1804: tour in Nagoya with Bandô Hikosaburô III, Nakamura Daikichi I, Bando Jûtarô I, Segawa Hamajirô and Mimasu Daigorô III; Utagorô played at the Wakamiya no Shibai the roles of Sagisaka Bannai and Yakushiji Jirozaemon in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

1805: Utagorô made his début in ôshibai, in Ôsaka at the Kado no Shibai.

Beginning of 1808: Utagorô and his master Nakamura Utaemon III went together to Edo.

3rd lunar month of 1808: Nakamura Utagorô took the name of Nakamura Tôzô II at the Nakamuraza, where he played the role of Matsui no Gengo in the drama "Koromo Yayoi Hanago no Keizu".

5th lunar month of 1809: Tôzô played at the Nakamuraza the role of Sagisaka Bannai in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

9th lunar month of 1810: Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Komochi Yamanba" was staged for the first time in Edo, at the Nakamuraza; Tôzô played the role of the koshimoto Ozasa [casting]. He also played the roles of Ôe Onitsura and Yashio in the drama "Date Asobi Kuruwa Fûzoku".

7th lunar month of 1811: Tôzô played at the Nakamuraza the roles of Sagisaka Bannai and Ichimonjiya Tokubê in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

1st lunar month of 1813: Tôzô's rank in the Edo hyôbanki, handôgataki section, was jô-jô-(shiro)kichi (superior - superior - (white) excellent) [visual].

4th lunar month of 1814: Tôzô played at the Nakamuraza the roles of Sagisaka Bannai, Zempachi and Rin in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

6th lunar month of 1814: Tôzô played at the Nakamuraza the roles of Mihara Ariemon and Gonkurô in the drama "Futatsu Chôchô Kuruwa Nikki".

11th lunar month of 1815: Tôzô's yearly salary was 450 ryô.

5th lunar month of 1816: Tôzô appeared on stage for the last time, in Edo at the Nakamuraza, where he performed in the drama "Hototogisu Misao Banashi".

8th day of the 7th lunar month of 1816 [1]: Tôzô died in Edo.

Comments:

Nakamura Tôzô II was a good and quite popular dôkegata and handôgataki actor, who was trained in Kamigata but achieved fame for himself in Edo in the 1810s. His most famous role was Sagisaka Bannai in the drama "Kanadehon Chûshingura".
