Matsuyama Koshikibu I

Dates of birth and death unknown. His first stage name was Yoshizawa Koshikibu and he was most likely a disciple of Yoshizawa Ayame I [1]. First record in the 9th lunar month of 1719, when he performed at the Ônishi no Shibai. He settled in Kyôto in Fall 1719 and became disciple of Yamamoto Kamon, who gave him the name of Yamamoto Koshikibu when he performed as a wakashugata in the 11th lunar month of 1719 in Kyôto the role of the eye doctor Makino in the kaomise drama "Hôraisan Hiyoku no Tsurukame", which was produced by Yamatoyama Jinzaemon I for the nadai Ebisuya Kichirôbê. He became wakaonnagata in the 11th lunar month of 1724, when he performed in Kyôto at Hayagumo Chôdayû's theater in the kaomise drama "Sanmen Daikoku Mangoku Dawara", which was produced by Mihogi Gizaemon I. He went bak to Ôsaka in Fall 1726 and took the name of Matsuyama Koshikibu I in the 11th lunar month of 1726 at the Naka no Shibai, playing the role of Makino in the kaomise drama "Hakoiri Daikoku Gane" which was produced by Kaneko Kichizaemon. He played in the 1st lunar month of 1729 at the Ônishi no Shibai the roles of the koshimoto Yamanoi and the sarashime Oyana in the new year drama "Kaga no Kuni Shinohara Gassen". His rank in the 1730 Ôsaka hyôbanki [2], wakaonnagata section, was two black strokes above jô-(shiro)jô (superior - (white) superior) [visual]. No record afterwards.

The actor Matsuyama Sanjûrô held the name of Matsuyama Koshikibu II at the beginning of his career, up to 1752.
