Career:

January 1922: he makes his first appearance on stage at Shintomiza where he receives the name of Kataoka Jûzô V.

23 December 1926: his father Kataoka Ichizô IV dies.

November 1928: premiere at the Kabukiza of Oka Onitarô's dance-drama "Kakuju Senzai"; Jûzô plays the role of a boy [more details].

October 1934: Kataoka Jûzô V becomes nadai and takes the name of Kataoka Ichizô V at Kabukiza by playing in the drama "Kiri Hitoha".

1946: Ichizô joins Matsumoto Kôshirô VII's troupe.

1949: Ichizô becomes disciple of the actor Ichikawa Ebizô IX.

December 1949: Chikamatsu Monzaemon's drama "Ikutama Shinjû" is revived at the Mitsukoshi Gekijô, using a new script written by Uno Nobuo; Ichizô plays the role of Inden'ya Chôsaku [more details].

March 1954: premiere at the Kabukiza of the 1st part of Funahashi Seiichi's drama "Ejima Ikushima"; Ichizô plays the role of the ukiyoeshi Debaya Genshichi [more details].

October 1954: premiere at the Kabukiza of the 2nd part of Funahashi Seiichi's drama "Ejima Ikushima"; Ichizô plays the role of Meakashi Tanekichi [more details].

February 1976: revival at the Kabukiza of a 5-act revised version of Funahashi Seiichi's drama "Ejima Ikushima"; Ichizô plays the role of Tsugaya Zenroku [casting].

February 1977: premiere at the Kabukiza of Ikenami Shôtarô's drama "Ichimatsu Kozô no Onna"; Ichizô plays the role of the rônin Ôkubo Kanzô [more details].

August 1980: revival at the National Theatre of Namiki Shôzô I's drama "Yadonashi Danshichi Shigure no Karakasa"; Ichizô plays the role of Takaichi Kazuemon [casting]; he receives a special prize from the National Theatre for his performance.

March 1981: revival at the National Theatre of Kawatake Mokuami's drama "Jitsugetsusei Kyôwa Seidan"; Ichizô plays the role of Yonezô [casting].

Kataoka Ichizô V's best roles: Kômori Yasugorô ("Kirare Yosa"), Shundô Genba ("Terakoya"), Hirayama ("Ômi Genji Senjin Yakata"), Narita Gorô ("Shibaraku"), Kitamura Daizen ("Kôchiyama"), Hirayama no Mushadokoro ("Jinmon/Kumiuchi") and the countryside samurai ("Sukeroku").

He had the reputation to be really fond of Sake.
