Career:

July 1913: he started his career as a disciple of Onoe Kikugorô VI and made his debut on stage at the Kabukiza, where he received the name of Onoe Kotosaburô and performed in the drama "Minatogawa Satsuki no Hitoyo".

May 1920: he became nadai and was allowed to take the disused name of Onoe Koisaburô III; he performed at the Ichimuraza in the drama "Otokodate Shibai-mae no Nigiwai", which also celebrated the shûmei of Onoe Shinshichi V and Onoe Kikujûrô III.

September 1921: premiere at the Ichimuraza of Yamamoto Yûzô's drama "Sakazaki Dewa-no-Kami"; Koisaburô played the role of the Sakazaki kashin Matsukawa Genrokurô [more details].

June 1934: premiere in Tôkyô at the Tôkyô Gekijô of Hasegawa Shin's drama "Kurayami no Ushimatsu"; Koisaburô played the role of the okappiki Tsunematsu [casting].

October 1944: Koisaburô played for the first time the role of Izumiya Seibê in the drama "Bunshichi Mottoi", which was staged at the Shinbashi Enbujô; the role of Chôbê was played by Onoe Kikugorô VI.

March 1948: Koisaburô played at the Mitsukoshi Gekijô the role of Fujiwara no Shihei in the drama "Kurumabiki"; the roles of Matsuômaru, Umeômaru and Sakuramaru were played by Bandô Hikosaburô VII, Onoe Kurôemon II and Ichimura Kakitsu VIII.

10 July 1949: his master Onoe Kikugorô VI died.

September 1949: Koisaburô played for the first time the role of Genroku in "Kanpei Harakiri", in Tôkyô at the Imperial Theater.

February 1950: Koisaburô played at the Shinbashi Enbujô the role of Miyakoshi Genba in the drama "Imoseyama Onna Teikin".

July 1951: revival at the Shinbashi Enbujô of Kawatake Mokuami's drama "Jitsugetsusei Kyôwa Seidan"; Koisaburô played the role of Arakuma no Kurozô [casting].

March 1954: premiere at the Kabukiza of the 1st part of Funahashi Seiichi's drama "Ejima Ikushima"; Koisaburô played the role of the okuishi Kôchikuin [more details].

October 1954: premiere at the Kabukiza of the 2nd part of Funahashi Seiichi's drama "Ejima Ikushima"; Koisaburô played the role of the okuishi Kôchikuin [more details].

March 1955: premiere at the Kabukiza of the 3rd (and last) part of Funahashi Seiichi's drama "Ejima Ikushima"; Koisaburô played the role of the okuishi Kôchikuin [more details].

December 1955: Koisaburô played at the Meijiza the roles of Ono no Kudayû and Genroku in "Kanadehon Chûshingura".

May 1956: Koisaburô played at the Kabukiza the role of Yazaemon in the drama "Sushiya".

December 1962: Koisaburô played for the last time the role of Izumiya Seibê in the drama "Bunshichi Mottoi", which was staged at the Tôyoko Hall; the role of Chôbê was played by Ichikawa Sadanji III.

October 1963: Koisaburô played at the Misonoza the role of Yazaemon in the drama "Sushiya".

November 1966: Koisaburô played at the National Theatre the role of Haji no Hyôe in the drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami".

November 1968: Koisaburô played for the last time the role of Genroku in "Kanpei Harakiri", in Tôkyô at the Kabukiza.

February 1969: Koisaburô played at the Kabukiza the role of Yazaemon in the drama "Sushiya".

September 1969: Koisaburô played at the National Theatre the role of the priest Kobê in the drama "Tsuta Momiji Utsunoya Tôge".

October 1969: Koisaburô played at the National Theatre the role of Taira no Kiyomori in the drama "Kiichi Hôgen Sanryaku no Maki".

November 1969: Koisaburô played at the Kabukiza the roles of Hamamatsuya Kôbê and the karô Shibui Gorôemon in the drama "Benten Kozô" and the dance-drama "Kagami Jishi".

December 1969: Koisaburô played at the Kabukiza the role of Miyako Hyôgorô in the drama "Sendai Watarijô Hibun".

June 1971: Koisaburô appeared on stage for the last time, in Tôkyô at the National Theatre, where he played the role of Ise Sadachika in Mishima Yukio's drama "Muromachi Hangonkô".

30 December 1974: Koisaburô died.

Onoe Koisaburô III was an important supporting tachiyaku actor and a member of the Onoe Kikugorô Gekidan, who served for more than 61 years three generations of masters of the Onoe clan: Onoe Kikugorô VI, Onoe Baikô VII and Onoe Kikugorô VII. His best roles were Genroku ("Kanpei Harakiri"), Izumiya Seibê ("Bunshichi Mottoi"), Rokurôdayû ("Ishikiri Kajiwara"), the cook Sukeji ("Kurayami no Ushimatsu"), Ikiuma no Ganpachi ("Shisen Ryô") and Tahê ("Sakanaya Sôgorô").
